Our History

A Veterinary Practice has been established in Bishops Castle for more than 120 years, being a pivotal part of the local community for all that time.

Mr Beaumont goes back to the 1920’s, with Mr Howell taking over and running the surgery in the 1940s and 1950s from the Porch House on the main street in town. His step-son, Mr Bowen, then took the practice on for a short period afterwards. By the 1950s, Guy Lambie in partnership with Archie Matheson in 1953, ran the practice from 17 Welsh Street. ‘Sam’ Gillett joined them in 1960 where they then operated in a premises at 2, High Street.

Percy Allwood joined the team in 1971, starting out for 2 years’ experience and he is still here 50 years later in his first and only job! At that time, small animal work was a couple of appointments a day and each vet had a round of approximately 15 farm visits to get through. They did small animal surgery every Wednesday afternoon, using very different anaesthesia and surgical techniques than we have available to us now.

Percy Allwood and Lloyd Jones who joined in the mid-1980s, then moved to the current premises on the industrial estate in 1993. Since then, the business has continued to grow hugely with a wealth of small animal, farm animal and equine clients.

We are proud to say that the friendly, community and traditional values held for over a century, are still very much part of our practice values to date and will continue for many years to come!
